Onesti city is located in Moldavia, in the Trotus sub Carpathians, in Tazlau Casin depression, at the altitude of about 197-209 meters. Onesti town, located at the junction of the Trotus, Casin, Oituz, Tazlau rivers stretches for an area of about 5,248 hectares, and its population is about 60.000 inhabitants. The place was documentary founded in the 15th century during the rule of Stefan cel Mare (Stephan the Brave), the most important ruler of Moldavia. In Borzesti, at a distance of 6 km. from Onesti, is the birth place of this greatest ruler, who was named by the contemporary Pope of Rome, "The Athlete of Christendom" for the way in which Stefan cel Mare stopped the Ottoman and Tatar invasions at the Eastern gates of Europe. Stefan cel Mare was contemporary with Vlad Tepes (Count Dracula) ruler of Wallachia, another part of the future and modern Romania, together with Moldavia and Transilvania. Helped by Stefan cel Mare to become a ruler, Vlad Tepes fought for the independence of his country, and remained in the Romanians conscience for more than 500 years.Onesti grew up as a modern town in 1953, together with the construction of Borzesti petrochemical platform which consists of RAFO Onesti (the refinery part), CAROM (the synthetic rubber part), and CHIMCOMPLEX (the inorganic chemical part). The One?ti town was named from March 1965 till 1990 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, after the name of president of Romania. After communism disappeared, the town returned at the name of Onesti The 1976 Olympics most famous athlete (gymnast) Nadia Com?neci was born here.
