Our country

  Spain, is a country located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Spanish territory also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast, and two autonomous cities in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, that border Morocco.
The name Spain was derived from the ancient Roman name for Iberia, Hispania.

Some facts about Spain:
- Capital: Madrid.
- Area: 504,030 km², Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe after France.
- Political organization: Spain is composed of 17 autonomous communities (fifty provinces) and two autonomous cities with varying degrees of autonomy thanks to its Constitution, which nevertheless explicitly states the indivisible unity of the Spanish nation.

- Population: in 2008 Spain officially reached 46 million people. Spain's population density, at 91/km² (235/sq mi), is lower than that of most Western European countries and its distribution along the country is very unequal. With the exception of the region surrounding the capital, Madrid, the most populated areas lie around the coast.
- Government: Spain is a democracy organised in the form of a parliamentary government under a constitutional monarchy. It is a member of the European Union and NATO.
- Oficial languages:
- Spanish (español or castellano) is spoken all over the country and so is the only language with official status nationwide.
- Co-official languages:
- Basque (euskera) (2%) in the Basque Country and Navarre;
- Catalan (català) (17%) in Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands;
- Galician (galego) (7%) in Galicia.
- Culture: Because of its location, Spanish culture has been influenced by many nations and peoples throughout its history (the Iberian, Celtiberian, Latin, Visigothic, Roman Catholic, and Islamic cultures). In addition, the history of the nation and its Mediterranean and Atlantic environment have played strong roles in shaping its culture. After Italy, Spain has the second highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world, with a total of 40. The country itself has been an important source of influence to other regions, chiefly during the Modern Era, when it became a global empire that has left a legacy of over 400 million Spanish speakers today.

- Religion: Spain has today no official religion but Roman Catholicism is the main religion in the country.
- 76% of Spaniards identify themselves as Catholics.
- 2% identify with another religious faith.
- 19% identify themselves as non-religious.
- Ethnic groups:
- 88.7% Spanish
- 11.3% Other (Romanian, Moroccan, Ecuadorian, Colombian, British)
- National Day: it is held annually on October 12 and is a national holiday which commemorates the exact date of 1492 when Christopher Columbus first set a foot in America. To commemorate it, there is a parade led by the military (usually held in Madrid) presided by the Spanish King, who is the Head of State, since Spain is politically organized as a constitutional monarchy. The Presidente del Gobierno has also a special role in the ceremony, only second to the King.
